I think I figured out why this failed on occasion for me. It's when the iCloud Drive app hasn't yet downloaded the file but it's passing it to the app anyway. I don't know why iCloud Drive would do that, but that seems to be the only case that's failing.

I'm trying to install an older version of Garageband. I currently have Garageband 10.1 on OS El Capitan Version 10.11.2 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015). I don't like the way you can't precisely trim the Cycle Region to the exact length I want in GB 10.1. Before, I was able to do that on the older version of GB, which is the one I would like to download. I think it was GB 6.0.5.
I understand you want to work with Garageband 6.0.5 with OS X El Capitan. If you deleted Garageband 6 from your Applications folder, you can still retrieve it by downloading it from the iTunes Store. The resource below will explain how to download past purchases and how to install loops if they are missing.
Try deleting the app, and redownloading it. It should automatically download with the with the latest version unless you are jailbroken a la 'App Admin' and have some weird setting on to disable updates. You might also just have an older device that Apple stopped supporting for Garage Band in which case there is not much you can do except perhaps find an apk online and download it, but those rarely work well and often are malicious.

Followed your steps as I have had on my mac in the past. The version it downloads is old (6.0.5) and will not install as it is 32bit.My Mac is a 2013 model running Catalina 10.15.7Any ideas?
dang it, we only have older macs but the one i record on has the latest version, the one my hubby mixes and masters it on is older and has can only run older version, i just went to load the song into the old mac for mixing and oh dear, it wont load the file as it is recorded on a newer version of garageband. rethink required. all his presets for plugins etc are on the old mac. Both macs struggle with the files but was tryng to avoid paying for a new mac :{ didnt even think of that when i did an update a while back.
I did not read through the comments to see if someone offered this solution but the workaround on an older Mac is to sign into another Apple ID where the program was previously downloaded, download the older version, then log out. I logged into my Apple ID account on my old Mac laptop, downloaded Garage Band, then logged back out and logged my kid back in. Worked like a charm.
Yet the Files app alone is not enough for our task. Here is the plan: we need to export the m4a file to Files, and open it in the Document app, then using the built-in browser to convert m4a to mp3 and download it. Let's break it down to detailed steps with pictorial instructions:

This software is no longer available for the download. This could be due to the program being discontinued, having a security issue or for other reasons.
A new feature included with GarageBand '09 and later is the ability to download pre-recorded music lessons from GarageBand's Lesson Store for guitar and piano. There are two types of lesson available in the Lesson Store: Basic Lessons, which are a free download, and Artist Lessons, which a user must purchase. The first Basic Lessons for both guitar and piano are included with GarageBand. In GarageBand 10, many sounds (aka patches, which Apple refers to as 'audio units') which are listed within the sound library are dimmed and unusable until the user pays an additional fee which allows the utilization of those sounds, bundled with the guitar and piano lessons. Attempting to click on and select the dimmed audio units to apply to the track causes promotional prompts to appear, requiring the user to log on with their Apple ID and furnish credit card information before knowing the price of the bundle.
The Sound Library was added in November 2017 with the 2.3.1 update and lets the user download additional free instruments, drummers and loops released as Sound Packs that are added to the app over time.
A new Sound Library was added in November 2017 which allows users to download additional free instruments and loops released as part of Sound Packs that are added to the app over time. A new Beat Sequencer for creating drum beats was also added in this update.
I ended up just logging into the app store and going to purchases and installed from there, it said i needed Big Sur but could download the old version. It downloaded 10.3.5 and i used composer to make a package from that version and then i uploaded the pkg to jamf and pushed it out that way.
